Little Desert National Park lies in the Wimmera on the traditional Country of the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk Peoples, a poor-soil landscape of heath and mallee where camping areas such as Ackle Bend and Horseshoe Bend sit along the Wimmera River, known to the Wotjobaluk Peoples as Barringgi Gadyin. A large fast-moving, lightning-ignited bushfire swept through the park last summer, and that fire history is still the dominant fact governing access here rather than any single facility notice.

Recorded conditions here are presently an aerial pest-control program and the ongoing bushfire-recovery closure: an aerial pest-animal control program using firearms is scheduled for specific dates and daily hours, during which visitor safety measures apply within the program area; and the park’s Eastern and Central Blocks both remain closed, a stage in the recovery from a fire that damaged roughly 70% of the park.
