Lysterfield Park rises from the southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges and is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape that includes the traditional Country of the Bunurong People and the Wurundjeri People. It is one of the busiest recreation parks near Melbourne: a 6 km Lake Circuit Trail, 24 km of mountain-bike trails including the State Mountain Bike Course used at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, sailing, kayaking and canoeing on the lake, and lakeside picnic areas where kangaroos and wallabies are commonly seen. Dogs are not permitted.

The recorded conditions differ in how much they affect a visit, so they are kept separate. The deer-control program closes the Northern Conservation Zone overnight, between 4:00pm and 8:00am on a number of nights, with signage in place when control is taking place - that is a genuine access restriction. The other notices are facility-level: some barbecues are closed following inspection until a licensed contractor can attend them, and the beach car park toilet block is closed for its seasonal winter closure while other toilet blocks, including at the boat ramp car park, remain open.
