Invasive Species Control Programs 2025 - 2027

Wilsons Promontory National Park will be conducting invasive species control programs from 1 July 2025 – 30 June 2027. Introduced species such as deer, rabbits, foxes and feral cats are all major threats to nature. By removing introduced hog deer and rabbits, we are reducing grazing pressure on the incredible variety of native plants and plant communities, including some that are nationally threatened. By targeting foxes and feral cats, we are reducing the threat of predation for native species such as the Southern Brown Bandicoot, Long-nosed Potoroo, Ground Parrot, New Holland Mouse, Eastern Pygmy Possum and the Hooded Plover. All animal control programs are carried out under strict conditions, compliant with all relevant legislation, Codes of Practice and Standard Operating Procedures, designed to ensure safe, effective, and humane practices are implemented. For further information, please visit Prom Sanctuary.

Sealers Cove boardwalk is closed

The Sealers Cove boardwalk needed to be rebuilt, following major storm and flood damage. This is a major and complex project. It will replace two kilometres of boardwalk over sensitive terrain while sensitively managing the surrounding environment. There is currently no public access to the boardwalk. Access to Sealers Cove Campground is only possible via a 25km hike from Telegraph Saddle. For more information, including expected timeframes for the rebuild, visit the Sealers Cove Boardwalk project page.

Stable planning context

How to check this park

Wilsons Promontory is reached through a long approach that narrows to one principal road before Tidal River. That makes the timing and purpose of a visit worth separating: a day walk, a campground stay and an overnight hike depend on different facilities even when they share the same park entrance. Parking controls, conservation programs, track works and temporary area closures can also apply to only one part of the Prom.

Coastal weather can change the practical character of the day without producing a formal closure. Wind, heat, rain, swell and visibility are separate checks from the Parks Victoria condition list. Mobile reception is uneven beyond the main visitor areas, so official pages and any information needed for the return journey are best checked before the final approach.

For an overnight stay, confirm the named campground or accommodation product rather than relying on a general park status. For a walk, match the official notice to the exact track, trailhead and access road. Before leaving, compare this page’s timestamp with the linked Parks Victoria record, then check VicEmergency and the current Bureau of Meteorology forecast. A missing matching notice here means only that the latest automated check found no record assigned to this park; it does not describe every road, track, beach or facility.
